Permission Slips

“Life is a terminal condition. We’re all going to die…but we all, in some ways, wait for permission to live.” Kris Carr

We came into this world absolutely perfect.

We ate when we were hungry. We slept when we were tired (regardless of where we were or what was going on around us). When our parents said, “Let’s go to the park to play,” we never once stopped to ask ourselves if we deserved an afternoon of playing at the park or if we had done enough work to justify a few hours of pure, unadulterated joy.

Most of ...continue reading...

Life Will Never be the Same

“Transformation is never easy or painless, but essential to the growth of our soul.” Elizabeth Gilbert

It was the Sunday at the end of a long Thanksgiving weekend. While my husband was out, I packed a bag and placed it in my car.

When my husband came home, we sat there in the foyer and I told him I was leaving. I don’t remember exactly what I said, but I remember that anxious, confused and scared feeling as if it were yesterday.

When I walked out that door of my home that evening, I had crossed a sacred threshold ...continue reading...

Living in the Light

“When you possess light within, you see it externally.” Anaïs Nin

I had lunch with a dear friend this week and he was sharing with me the experience he had recently at Yosemite National Park with his partner and children. His enthusiasm about the Giant Sequoias they saw and the majesty and magic they experienced on their trip all brought chills to me.

As he was talking, the life coach in me couldn’t resist the beautiful metaphor that nature provides to us for our lives.

Sequoias are one of the most massive trees that exist in the world and ...continue reading...

Little White Lies

“Above all, don’t lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love.” Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

It needs no definition – you know what I’m talking about. They’re the little untruths we tell ourselves and everyone else that keep us from living an authentic life. We think our little lies are harmless because they’re not actually hurting anyone – but ...continue reading...

Living Courageously

“Many of my problems arose because I chose to play small, thinking that there I would find safety. But I was born with wings, and I was meant to spread them. Anything less will hurt me, will deny love to myself and others, and will mean that I will end my life never having flown the flight of spiritual glory.”  A Year of Miracles, Marianne Williamson

Last week, I explored one of the regrets that was listed in an online article entitled, “Top 5 Regrets of the Dying” published by Huffington Post. In case you missed it, the top ...continue reading...

Authenticity & an Aspiring Life Coach

“Do you have the courage to stand inside yourself and be who you really are?”  Oprah Winfrey

I had the absolute pleasure of being able to train this week with the best life coaches in the world, including arguably the most successful life coach there is – Martha Beck. I was inspired and challenged, encouraged and motivated. I gained insight from life coaches that have been helping people live out loud for more than 10 years. It was, in a word: amazing.

One of my takeaways from the training was the reminder that it’s important as coaches that we ...continue reading...

Our Path to Freedom

“The sweeter you are to yourself, the sweeter you will be to the world.” Sharon Pope

A few months ago, I read a life coaching inquiry by someone named Amy that said, “I’ve tried yoga, but I found myself crying at the end of each yoga practice, so I don’t want to do that anymore.” When you get in touch with your breath – the way you do in yoga, the way a singer loosens up their vocal cords, the way dancers or actors do before going on stage – you cannot hide your emotions. Breathing brings all of ...continue reading...

I See You.

Authenticity means exercising the compassion to know that we are all made of strength and struggle.”  Brené Brown, Gifts of Imperfection

I believe that “being seen” is one of the most profound human experiences we can have this side of heaven.  I think it means that someone understands, accepts and loves your heart, the core of your being.  They are able to fully acknowledge all the beauty right alongside all the ugly; they are able to smile at all the joy, as well as the sadness; they celebrate the light burning inside of us, as much as the darkness ...continue reading...
