If I Only Knew Then What I Know Now

If You Keep Doing the Same Thing, You Should Expect the Same Result.

If I Only Knew Then What I Know Now

If I Only Knew Then What I Know Now

“Life is brief, but if you’re brave, it’s deep.” Elissa Schappell

“Oh if I only knew then what I know now!” How many of us have said THAT before?

I led a life coaching workshop this past weekend, where women were asked to bring in a photograph of themselves when they were children, paste it into their journals and then write down the gentle whispers you would say to that young girl now – knowing what you know today.

I wanted to play along too and my whispers to my 10-year old self would be something like this:

We Attract What We Are

“The life you live is a reflection of what’s going on inside of you.” Oprah

There was a time – shortly after the divorce from my first husband but before I met my current husband, Derrick, that my man-picker was broken. I mean BROKEN.

At least that was my story for why I attracted and dated men that would lie or cheat or treat me as though I was not terribly important.

The real truth was that I was attracting exactly what I was at that time. Now I don’t like to think of myself as a liar ...continue reading...

My Peace is My Responsibility

“If you’re not positive energy, you’re negative energy.” Mark Cuban

Every interaction with someone carries with it energy and that energy either makes you feel more alive or it makes you feel like running and jumping off a cliff. There have been a few interactions recently that leaned more toward cliff diving than I would like and it got me thinking.

I was sitting at dinner one night with 2 ladies and Marilyn began talking about some of her struggles with becoming an empty-nester. She was very close with her daughter and being able to share both ...continue reading...

What My 13-Year Old Niece Taught This Life Coach about Beauty

“Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief that she is beautiful.” – Author Unknown

Dove® launched their Campaign for Real Beauty in 2004 after finding through research that only 2% of women around the world would describe themselves as beautiful.

In my first marriage, I was told that I looked pretty or cute when I would get dressed up, but not once was I ever called beautiful, by my husband in the 14 years we were together. As a matter of fact, I couldn’t recall any man ever telling me I was beautiful.

So, when someone I’ll ...continue reading...

Little White Lies

“Above all, don’t lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love.” Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

It needs no definition – you know what I’m talking about. They’re the little untruths we tell ourselves and everyone else that keep us from living an authentic life. We think our little lies are harmless because they’re not actually hurting anyone – but ...continue reading...

The Certainty of Uncertainty and the Promise of Possibility

“I spent a lot of years trying to outrun or outsmart vulnerability by making things certain or definite, black and white, good and bad. My inability to lean into the discomfort of vulnerability limited the fullness of those important experiences that are wrought with uncertainty: love, belonging, trust, joy and creativity to name a few.”  ~Brené Brown

If there’s one thing that’s certain in life, it’s that change happens.  People will change, relationships will change, jobs will change, our health will change and in many ways, we ourselves are constantly changing. Many times, change brings with it a state ...continue reading...

Living Courageously

“Many of my problems arose because I chose to play small, thinking that there I would find safety. But I was born with wings, and I was meant to spread them. Anything less will hurt me, will deny love to myself and others, and will mean that I will end my life never having flown the flight of spiritual glory.”  A Year of Miracles, Marianne Williamson

Last week, I explored one of the regrets that was listed in an online article entitled, “Top 5 Regrets of the Dying” published by Huffington Post. In case you missed it, the top ...continue reading...

Permission to be Happy

“You’re worried about how you’re going to feel at the end of your life? What about right now? Live. Right this minute. That’s where the joy is at!”   ~Abigail Thomas

The Huffington Post republished an article from Collective Evolution entitled, “The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying” and I’ve decided to create a blog post about the ones that really speak to me, delving further into the how these regrets exist in our lives today, but are suppressed until the promise of living no longer exists. We each have the power to make changes in our lives now so ...continue reading...

Powerful and Peaceful

“If you surrender to the wind, you can ride it.”  Toni Morrison

When you think of the word powerful, what comes to mind? An executive in a big office? A large crushing wave in the Pacific ocean? It’s defined as “having great power or strength.”

When you think of the word peaceful, what do you think of? Buddha? Meditation? A serene brook with water floating through it. Peaceful is defined as “free from disturbance” or “tranquil”

Why can’t we be simultaneously powerful and peaceful? These words seem like they’re opposites, but they’re really not – or at least they ...continue reading...

Authenticity & an Aspiring Life Coach

“Do you have the courage to stand inside yourself and be who you really are?”  Oprah Winfrey

I had the absolute pleasure of being able to train this week with the best life coaches in the world, including arguably the most successful life coach there is – Martha Beck. I was inspired and challenged, encouraged and motivated. I gained insight from life coaches that have been helping people live out loud for more than 10 years. It was, in a word: amazing.

One of my takeaways from the training was the reminder that it’s important as coaches that we ...continue reading...
